Need 6 volunteers. The Rotary Dictionary Project provides students a personal dictionary of their very own that will serve them at least through elementary and middle school. Many educators and researchers see this as a key to better reading, speech, and writing. These skills will improve student performance in other subjects as well. Receiving the dictionaries from Rotary members is beneficial to students as well. The young people meet successful adults in their community who care enough about them to purchase these dictionaries and come to their school to present them personally. |

As a member of the growing high-tech economy in Hawai‘i, the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) international collaboration has made a commitment to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education on Hawai‘i Island. As one of the greatest equalizers, education can also strengthen our workforce and economy so that families and communities thrive. The TMT created The Hawaii Island New Knowledge (THINK) Fund at Hawai‘i Community Foundation in October 2014 to provide grants, scholarships and community leadership to further this purpose. |

Community Emergency Response Teams
Sep. 21, 2016
Learn about how, as individuals or a club, we can assist during disasters. CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers can assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT volunteers are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects. |

This year since both Rotary in Hawai’i and the park are celebrating their one hundredth anniversaries. To celebrate the joint centennials, we want to have at least 100 East Hawai’i Rotarians to remove invasive plants from the rainforest in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Saturday, September 24, National Public Lands Day, has been chosen as the work day. This is a fee free day in the park. |

Upcoming Season-- Enjoy and Support
Oct. 26, 2016
Entering into his fourth season (2016-17) as the leader of the University of Hawai'i Hilo men's basketball program, Coleman took the reigns of a team that won just six games in 2012-13 and started the rebuilding process. The Vulcans won seven games in his first season and then went 12-14 overall in 2014-15. UHH also improved to 8-11 in the PacWest Conference that year. Last season, after a 0-9 start, Coleman's team righted the ship, winning four of their final five games to finish 9-11 in conference play, just missing out on the PacWest tournament. |

Community Paramedicine
Feb. 15, 2017
Community paramedicine is a new and evolving model of healthcare where paramedics provide onsite care to the homeless and higher risk individuals as a preventive means to reduce demand on emergency care facilities. Paramedics work together with doctors and social service providers. We are the first county in the State to implement this program. |
