Miyuki, in Japanese, means "deep snow". Her father loved the tranquility of snow. She is the elder of two daughters. Miyuki is the mother of two daughters, one of whom was born with Down's syndrome. She is a single mother, but that is another story.
She has a diverse education and work experience. In Japan, she studied English literature, international trading, and education. She worked in international information services and cross-cultural education. In Hawaii, she earned a liberal arts degree and Hawaiian Lifestyle Certificate from HCC, and studied education at the UHH. She started as a student services coordinator at HCC, then teacher at St. Joseph's but was asked to takeover the international students program, which has grown and keeps her busy. Yet, she still has made time to start a business. As the owner of Kayama LLC, she exports Ka'u coffee to Japan.
Her interests include volunteering with Downs syndrome organizations, hula, swimming, cooking, and reading. Her spirituality is rooted in Buddhism.
Her life motto, which she strives to live by, is expressed in the following Hawaiian words:
Aloha (always with love), Ho'omau (don't give up),
Malama (take care and preserve), Ikaika (be strong in body, mind, and spirit), Makaukau (always be ready),
At the Club assembly on 7 December, the following ideas were presented as ways to improve our Club:
What the Members Want from the Club:
Provide more social events as had done in the past, i.e. St. Patrick’s Day, Valentines Day among others.
“Bring a Friend” social - Members bring a friend to rotary meetings or to a casual get together of few members at restaurant or community events.
Contact Club members that are missing at meetings, how they are doing.
Breakfast meetings in other locations.
Vocational speakers, i.e. member of the Club and other Clubs to know the members more about themselves.
More business speakers, i.e. members of the Club and other Clubs to know about their business (nature of the business, business policies, status of the business)
Speakers that provide interactive activity at the Club’s meetings, e.g. yoga, tai chi,
Teach Club members to dance salsa, inter-relationship
Youth thinks that rotary is for old people. Encourage people and businesses to share about their business and business perspective
Attend other Club’s vocational meetings.
If you have additional ideas/suggestions, please send them to Kevin at hopkins @hawaii.edu
