Women in Rotary
On May 20, we celebrated Women in Rotary and Sharon Scheele outlined a bit of the history. Women weren't admitted until after the US Supreme Court ruled in 1987. The first attempts by Rotarians weren't in the US. In 1950, a Club in India asked (and was denied) to have 'male' be dropped from eligibility. In 1964, a request came from Ceylon; in 1972 there were three proposals from US Clubs. In 1977, a California Club violated the rules against women and the Club was kicked out of Rotary. Another four women were inducted into our Club this year.
