Today's Inspiration
The inspiration today, Sept 9, 2021, is a story from Sept 11, 20 years ago, told to me by Shelley Harwayne, literacy educator, author and School District #2 Superintendent.
All of us watched with horror as the Trade Towers fell, but what many people do not know is that the towers were in School District #2, across the street from a multi-story school that faced the towers. The children looked out the windows as the towers were hit and one primary child said, "Teacher, the birds are on fire." The child was watching people jumping from the towers to escape. Many of those children had parents who worked in those towers.
In that moment, that sudden immediate emergency, the teachers in Manhattan followed their emergency procedures and evacuated every child from that school and others. Some teachers took students home until they could locate parents and guardians. It was a time of incredible heroism and quick thinking to assure the safety of students, over 1 million children.
In the days that followed, Shelley Harwayne had to relocate an entire school. I can't imagine the pain and the loss experienced by this district as a terrible event impacted not just the firemen, police, EMTs and work crews, but thousands of families, children and school staff.
I find inspiration in the actions of the staff members who kept their heads and did their jobs, keeping children safe. I find inspiration in the educators who continued to teach and administrators who were challenged, all with unimaginable tasks for months, an entire school year.
Shelley Harwayne retired at the end of that year, largely due to the impact of the destruction of the trade towers. When we remember this horrific terrorist attack, we should remember and be inspired by the action of educators and those children who were safe that day and in the days that followed.
Shelley Harwayne led an effort in her schools to invite children to write about 9-11 as one means of helping children in the aftermath. Those art projects and writings were collected in Messages from Ground Zero, published by Heinemann Press and distributed free.
