Alan Shiraishi is the District Manager of Junior Achievement of Hawaii.

As District Manager, Alan manages daily operations of JA programs on Hawaii Island, primarily East Hawaii, by building relationships with educators, recruiting and training volunteers, and implementing all administrative procedures. He coordinates the execution of programs, increases public awareness for all programs, and assures program quality and expansion.

Prior to his current role, Alan volunteered for JA's elementary, intermediate and high school programs for over 14 years. Alan has over 40 years of experience in business management in the banking industry and is well connected in the Hilo community with current and past affiliations with the Waiakea Lions Club, Toastmasters International, Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Hawaii, to name a few.

Do you know your cell phone is powered by a battery which contains rather precious material created during rare occasions in the universe? How about your golf club - the material that makes the shafts originated inside the stars and recycled through the end-of-life explosions. I would like to showcase some of these connections between the familiar items and the rare phenomena or objects in the universe, revealed by the astronomical telescopes. Then I would like to touch on some materials used to construct next generation telescopes actually have common characteristics with the household items like Pyrex in your fridge. Stars are out of the world, but their products are inside and around us! 

Profile of the speaker:

Saeko S. Hayashi is a long time Hilo resident and currently in California. Official title is the associate professor of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. When she was a green astronomer whose first work was with a radio telescope on Maunakea, she always carried an English dictionary (printed one!) to look up words and sentences. Her second tour of duty in Hawaii was with the Subaru Telescope for about two decades. Now she can consult words in a hand-held devices. Her present work is making “da bestest” mirror of a telescope for the next generation explorers. Her two kolohes grew up in Hilo are now in Nevada and in Scotland.

• ABSTRACT: The UK exited the EU on 31 January 2020 just as COVID-19 commenced its insidious reach into Europe. This talk will consider the impacts of Brexit on the UK's response to the pandemic and how the pandemic may derail the UK's timetable for an end to the Brexit transition period. 
• BIO: Sara Cunningham is the daughter of Richard and Michelle Cunningham. She grew up in Hilo and attended Hilo Union, Hilo Intermediate and Hilo High before going on to graduate from Brown University with honors and receive a Masters in Financial Regulation from the London School of Economics. Currently, Sara is the Head of European Regulatory and Compliance for Tetragon, an investment firm based in London.

Back by popular demand, the rice project continues... 

As most of you may know, we have been assisting the Food Basket with a rice project where we have been breaking down large rice bag quantities into smaller 5lb sizes.  The needs of the Food Basket during the COVID-19 lockdown are in great demand and they have reached out to us and asked for help.

The Food Basket delivered 3 pallets of rice yesterday to Hilo Daijingu for repackaging.

We are looking at a work day tomorrow, 05/20,  with two work shifts available at 2-4pm and 4-6pm. We are planning 2 hrs shifts instead of three because there is less rice to process this time around.   

If you are interested in volunteering for this project, please email me so that I can schedule you in, as we need to limit the work crews to about 6-7 people. 

We will be at the certified kitchen Hilo Daijingu located at 10 Anela St. in Hilo. 

We will have all necessary supplies including  there except for that you need to bring your own face mask, something to drink and snack on.  Again, because we will be on our feet for a majority of the 3 hours, please bring comfortable shoes.
