Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (PISCES)
Nov. 13, 2019
Bio: Kyla Edison is the Geology and Material Science Technician for the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (PISCES), a state funded aerospace company dedicated to promoting the aerospace industry in Hawai’i. A three-time PISCES summer intern, Kyla has been researching in the Planetary Geology field for almost six years. In 2015 & Kyla won a NASA Hawai’i Space Grant fellowship studying gully formation in Martian craters. In 2016 Kyla graduated from the University of Hawai’i Hilo with her bachelors in Geology, having had a dedicated focus to astronomy and planetary geology. Today Kyla is a full-time PISCES employee researching how to create construction materials using Lunar and Martian regolith(surface dust) for future base settlements. Kyla does this by using the strikingly comparable Hawaiian basalt rock and a technique known as sintering. Kyla’s biggest hope is that the construction materials PISCES creates can also have Earth based applications especially for economic development in Hawai’i. |

VASH - Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai`i
Dec. 04, 2019
Aloha and welcome to VASH Hawai`i Island, the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai`i on Hawai`i Island. Our Mission is to share the aloha spirit with visitors affected by adversity. We recognize that even during the fun and relaxation of vacations, unfortunate events can happen. And when far from home, visitors do not usually have access to their own support systems and resources.
VASH assistance is designed to help visitors cope with and recover from a variety of unfortunate situations such as crime victimization, the loss of a purse or wallet, medical situations, or the death of a loved one. When we receive referrals from the Hawai`i County Police Department, local area hospitals, airport security and others in the visitor industry, we assess each visitor’s situation and needs on a case by case basis to offer appropriate supportive services.
Our Vision is that every visitor touched by adversity will also be touched by the aloha spirit. Our hope is that the stories our visitors tell upon returning home are all about the care and love they received – the aloha – rather than being about the unfortunate incident. |

Dec. 07, 2019 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Aloha, The Rotary Club of Hilo Bay will be staffing the “Light Up A Life” this year on Saturday, December 7th from 10:00am to 6:00pm in the inside entrance of the Macy’s Women’s Store. This is a project that we've done many times in the past but not since around 2016. Volunteers set or stand at the table set up in front of the store. A Christmas tree is set up and the public is invited to place a commemorative ornament with the name of a loved one on the tree. Those who hang the ornament will be asked to make a donation but I don't remember if volunteers or staff from HCC keeps donations in a cash box.
We have enough volunteers to fill all the shifts, but stop by at the table, cheer and donate. 10:00am to 12:00 noon:
12:00 noon to 2:00pm: 2:00pm to 4:00pm: 4:00pm to 6:00pm: To see who signed up, please visit this website:
