Guest Speaker: Dr. Saeko Hayashi

Dr. Saeko Hayashi, associate professor of astronomical science at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) and one of the founding members of the Subaru Telescope team, provided perspective and status on the approved and to-be-constructed somewhere, Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT).
Dr. Hayashi explained that the Subaru telescope was constructed with a primary single mirror with an 8.3 meter diameter, whereas TMT has six-fold symmetry of 82 unique segments each (492 total) comprising the 30 meter mirror.
The challenge of manufacturing and assembling six sets of 82 unique segments plus one full set of spares is a challenging task to say the least. Ohara Inc. of Tokyo has been tasked with manufacturing the 574 mirror segments, this work began several years ago and continues today, the hardware for the project is fully funded. The blanks then need to be polished (up to one month per segment), shipped and then assembled on site.
Interestingly, the chemical composition of the segment (silica) is similar to Pele's hair, Mauna Kea's terrain being similar to Mars, shows coincidental interconnections of the project.
