Michael Kaleikini of Puna Geothermal Venture (subsidiary of publicly traded Ormat NYSE: ORA) provided an update on the anticipated reconnection of PGV to the Hawaii Island power grid as well as future plans for the site.
The site itself was shutdown as a result of the May 2018 eruption, some wells were capped for safety reasons and some HELCO infrastructure was destroyed along with the main road leading to the facility. The road has been cleared and the intent is to upgrade the equipment (newer technologies) in order to get up to 46 megawatts of flexible capacity from 38 megawatts prior to the eruption. Additional capacity up to 60 megawatts is possible with the appropriate approvals and political will to get it done.
PGV would like to be back up and running in 2020, actual timing is dependent on approval of a new Power Purchase Agreement with HELCO now in the hands of the PUC.
The State of Hawaii has a goal to use 100% renewable energy by 2045, PGV is critical to Hawaii Island's roadmap to achieve this based on what is in place today.
