Today's Inspiration and Quote

"It is much better to slip on your foot than it is to slip on your tongue."
            - Ben Franklin
Quote of the day:
"Since we cannot know all that there is to be known about anything, we ought to know a little bit about everything"
             - Blaise Pascal (1623-1662)

Guests

Guest Speaker: Officer James Steffen and K-9 Officer "Falcon"

James Steffen and his K-9 partner Falcon visited our club as part of the monthly vocational speaker program.  Officer Steffen has been with the Hawaii County Police Department for 13 years, his K-9 partner Falcon joined in 2015.  Their specialty is searching for missing people on Hawaii Island.

Falcon was born in North Carolina and had been abandoned by his original owners.  His talents were recognized and was trained as a service animal specializing in tracking by scent.  He was donated to the department and lives with his handler's family.  Upon his retirement, Falcon will live with his last handler.

Officers Steffen and Falcon are assigned to the Juvenile Aid Section, but also assist in locating fugitives when necessary as Falcon is the only tracking K-9 in the department.  They have been involved in several prominent missing person or fugitive search cases.  The nature of the work requires Falcon to wear a bullet and stab proof vest.

Falcon is an example of a dog that was successfully adopted and trained for public service.  It goes to show that you do not need to pay a premium to a breeder when there are many worthy animals available at your local shelter for a nominal fee.

Mahalo to Officer Steffen and Falcon for their service to our Community.
