Guest Speaker
Guest Speaker March 31 2021 Richard Courson Polio Plus
Wednesday’s Guest Speaker was Richard Courson. To begin his presentation Richard recognized Sharon Scheele as our Club’s first member of the Polio Plus Society. He asked “what is the Plus in Polio Plus?” It is the network of workers who also distribute other vaccinations, educate about sanitation, help Polio survivors get jobs and other necessary items. Two years ago, Richard volunteered to Chair the Polio Plus for 1 year because as a child he knew children who had been affected by Polio. At one time Polio was the most feared disease and the only thing Americans feared more was nuclear annihilation. Following the introduction of Dr. Jonas Salk’s vaccine Polio cases dropped dramatically in the United States. To be declared Polio free a country must verify they have no cases of Wild Polio Virus for 3 years. In 1979 Rotary International made a 5-year commitment to eradicate Polio in the Philippines. Once that goal was accomplished Rotary International decided to provide Polio Vaccines for all of the children in the world. At this time there are only 2 countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, that still have the Wild Polio Virus. So far this year there have been 2 cases of Polio reported. By contributing $100 or more annually each of us can help the Polio Plus effort.
