HRYF Give Aloha
Richard announced Foodland's Give Aloha campaign that began September 1 and ends September 30. When you buy at Foodland, add a donation to HRYF when you checkout and Foodland contributes about 20% more to your donation-- for example, a $50 donation becomes $60. To designate HRYF, the code is 77199; the cashier may have to look it up under Oahu charities. Give a copy of your Foodland receipt to Richard for credit.
Dictionary Project
Dayday announced the schedule for our annual dictionary distribution project to promote literacy. Students write their names in the dictionary as theirs to keep. Sign up with Dayday or online: Waiakea Elementary, September 5, 8:30am; Hilo Union, September 6, 12:10pm; Waiakeawaena, September 13, 10:00 and 11:00am; Ka 'Umeke Ka'eo, September 14, 9:00am.
Oktoberfest
Dayday distributed the Oktoberfest tickets. Due to the brisk sales of tables, each member was given 5 tickets (instead of the usual 6) to sell.
Hawaiian Telcom has invested significant infrastructure that positions Hawaii for the future. Bryan L. introduced Jason Thune, who explained the deployment of broadband fiber optics to serve the rural underserved areas of the Big Island and undersea cable projects connecting us to the mainland and beyond.
Richard C.-- $5 happy to visit London, Burgundy (France), and Barcelona (Spain). Will finish the trip by attending 50th high school reunion in Palm Springs, CA.
Bryan L.-- $5 thank you for speaker, Jason, who woke up extra early to attend this morning's meeting
Sharon S.-- $5 happy that the Rotary magazine September issue recognized our District 5000 for reading Dr. Seuss books to 300 first graders in March 2017. Our club was one of 35 clubs in Hawaii that participated. James T. chaired our participation.
Steve J.-- $5 happy to return from Boston, Connecticut, and Las Vegas to visit all three daughters; daughter's boyfriend first train, first squirrel.
Anita C.-- $5 happy to see Rotary friends after a 7-month gap! Thank you for the warm welcome. Been busy with 3 boys who came into their lives; tomorrow is big day to find out if they will be able to adopt them.
Yu Yok P.-- $1 happy to see Anita and happy for the 3 new lives entering her life.
Junichi N.-- $5 happy that the Hawaii Shima Fukuoka Kenjinkai recently accepted 20 middle school students from Miyako Town in Fukuoka and had them home-stayed with host families. They returned to Fukuoka safely last night.
Mary-- $5 thank you to those who attended social last week, especially Chester for the added pupus; any suggestions welcome.
