Alan Shiraishi the District Manager (Big Island) of Junior Achievement of Hawaii spoke to our club about JA's mission and opportunities to get involved locally.
Except for Alan, everyone at JA who works with the students are volunteers, including our own David DeLuz, Jr., Sharon Scheele and Irene Nagao who are current board members.
JA Hawaii Island is looking for volunteers to go into local classrooms to teach basic business and economic concepts on a sequential basis. The teaching materials and methods are provided so you do not need to have a business background in order to be effective.
Other opportunities include helping students form an actual "company" engaged in development and sale of products resulting in a profit or loss. It was noted that many times, profit is not the sole measure of success as many an entrepreneur has utilized failure or financial loss to fuel future success, so it is important to keep the results in perspective. The curriculum on Hawaii Island has been particularly innovative in combining text book theory with hands on experience.
If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions about volunteering, please contact Sharon Scheele.
