Guest Speaker: Bruce Mathews

Bruce Mathews, Dean of The College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management (CAFNRM) at UH-Hilo spoke to our club about some of their exciting areas of research that could have a significant economic impact locally as well as environmental impact globally.

With carbon dioxide emissions on the rise contributing to global warming, the use of bio-alternatives to fossil fuels is promising.  Our tropical climate and under-utilized agricultural lands are likely conducive to the creation of Bio-Economies which is the conversion of biomass into energy, products and services alongside but distinct from food production.

An area of synergy within the college is the newly created Aeronautical Science program where the use of un-manned aircraft (drones) carrying specialized sensors could assist in efficient deployment of fertilizer which improves yield, reduces waste and residual runoff that could harm the surrounding environment.

Sugar cane is one of the most promising crops for biomass, so the possibility exists to return to the past for an economic driver. An institute for tropical BioEconomy has been proposed at UH to focus on this area.

For more information on Bioenergy, the potential of biomass in a tropical climate and UH-Hilo’s College of Agriculture, please go to:
