Guest Speaker
Guest Speaker April 7 Terri Lum Program Director for Childrens Justice Center East Hawaii
Wednesday’s Guest Speaker was Terri Lum, Program Director for The Children’s Justice Center East Hawaii. They are one of five centers across the State and are fully accredited by the National Children’s Alliance and they also have a Non-Profit Partner called the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center. Over 30 years ago Former Congressman Robert “Bud” Cramer felt cases were not making it to the Prosecutor’s office and opened the first center in Huntsville Alabama where the professionals would come to the children and conduct the interviews in a comfortable environment for the child. In a public/private partnership the Friends group was formed to provide community support, assist in fundraising for training professionals and offer help to child victims and their families. The goals of the Children’s Justice Center are to provide a fair and neutral setting, minimize the number of interviews for the child, provide specialized training for the interviewers, and help all of the agencies involved stay in touch with each other so they know where the cases are at in the system. Terri shared a page that tracked types of abuse during 2006, 2018, and the dramatic rise in 2020. She also thanked Rotary for their involvement over the years.
