Guest Speaker

Guest Speaker April 21 2021 Misaki Saito

Wednesday’s Guest Speaker was Club Member Misaki Saito. Misa has lived in Hilo for 14 years and is originally from Akita, Japan. She was a Pharmacist in Japan but since moving to Hawaii she has become a full time Mom to her 2 children. This has given her the opportunity to explore other interests such as Japanese baking, sewing and quilting, and studying the Japanese Tea Ceremony at the tea house in Liliuokalani Garden. Misa also volunteers for the Japan Wizards Competition in the High Schools that is organized by the Japan America Society of Hawaii. Misa gave us a virtual tour of her hometown of Akita which is south of Hokkaido.  Akita is known for the Akita dog and the Namahage which looks scary but is a good spirit for the New Year. The famous festival they are known for is the Kanto Festival in August. They also host the national fireworks competition and it is the home to the Guinness Record Holder “Biggest Japanese Drum”.
