Guest Speaker
Guest Speaker Michael Mitchell, University of Hawaii, Hilo Art Department March 4 2021
Wednesday’s Guest Speaker was Michael Marshall from the University of Hawaii, Hilo Art Department. The Art Department is now considered a small department at the University because they had less than 10 Graduates. Michael discussed programs the Department has developed over the years including a Summer Art Institute in 2013 that included 11 international students, a retired educator, and undergraduate students from art and non-art majors. One of the visiting artists couldn’t transport his piece home so he donated it to the Art Department. His piece went to the Bay Clinic through the Art to Loan Program and the money generated was reinvested back into their Artist Residency Project. In 2012 they started the Artist Print Edition Project where visiting artists can work with the print studio and produce an original art print that is published in a limited portfolio. The portfolio is used as an archive, a teaching tool, and as a thank you for major donations to the program. Funds raised through major donations allow the students to travel to Oahu and visit museums and provide some services for visiting artists. Since their exhibition space, The Makery, shut down the Department has been in discussion with Bank of Hawaii to utilize space in their building across the street. The Department continues to grow the program with the community’s support.
