Guest Speaker
Guest Speaker Tim Hansen February 10 2021
Wednesday’s Guest Speaker was Tim Hansen. Since we are still in Peace Month Tim was very happy to continue discussing peace and conflict resolution and how it relates to Rotary’s Four-Way Test. The Four-Way Test was created in 1932 by Herbert J. Taylor and adopted by Rotary in 1943. It was originally created as a code of ethics for his employees to follow in their business and professional lives. The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. Sometimes stress and other factors cause us to react negatively to situations. Tim suggested “creating a pause” before responding or reacting to a situation and question if it’s the truth. He shared a video about resolving conflict by stopping and thinking before reacting, redirecting it into a useful discussion, investigating the origin of the conflict, and working together to find a solution. Be positive, willing to compromise, don’t blame or make excuses. Tim related a story from college that when faced with a conflict we need to take a NAP, non-agitated presence, and be a calm energy to de-escalate the situation. He finished with an action point for our club to have students read the Four-Way Test and explain what it means and how it is important to our community.

Happy Dollars
Mary Begier - $5 happy because she found out she won the door prize. She was on her way to physical therapy and staff were amazed at her mobility in her ankle and leg. She attributes it to practicing yoga.
Junichi Noumaru - $10 for celebrating his birthday.
Art Taniguchi - $5 happy. Happy Birthday to Junichi and told us about an attorney that was in virtual court and he had a cute cate filter on. He recommended we search for it.
Alan Okinaka - $10 happy. $5 for the Rotarian Genealogical group that is finding the positives that have happened in pandemic times and $5 for attending the composting session with Rotary Club of South Hilo. He came to the conclusion that composting is complicated but it was enjoyable to attend.
Mike Carroll - $5 happy. He found the cute cat video very quickly.
David De Luz - $10 happy because Anita C. and Paula U. are taking the lead in cleaning out the storage locker.
Richard Cunningham - $10 happy. $5 because David D. spoke up and reminded him that he had also received a check supporting HRYF. That was another $5.
Jan Abundo - $10 happy. Happy Birthday to Junichi and also she is celebrating her dogs birthday.
