Guest Speaker
Guest Speaker Justina Acevedo-Cross, Program Director, Hawaii Community Foundation
Our Guest Speaker this week was Justin Acevedo-Cross who was a scholarship awardee through the Hawaii Community Foundation and is now their Program Director in Hilo. HCF has 72 employees across all of the Islands and last year awarded scholarships to 270 students on the Big Island. Since the COVID 19 Pandemic began the Hawaii Resilience Fund, which is part of HCF, has been able to distribute over $12 million in grants to the community to assist with setting up testing centers, food banks, and child care centers. Justina also discussed the Promising Minds Initiative. She spoke about Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) and how these early experiences can shape a child’s brain and have long term negative effects. Nearly half of Hawaii’s children have experienced some adverse events. She reminded us that our brains and bodies are resilient and we can change the outcome of early adversity with positive actions.
