Guest Speaker: Tim Ward

Tim Ward, Program Coordinator of the Aeronautical Sciences Program at UH-Hilo spoke to our club about its beginnings, current state and where it is headed.
The program was founded primarily to create career opportunities for local students interested in aviation.  Aviation careers can be financially rewarding while allowing work/life balance.
The first cohort began this fall, there two career paths post-graduation: commercial or military.  The program will provide training and flight hours to enable a graduate to be hired directly by an airline/cargo carrier or enter the military as an officer without attending a service academy.
In some cases, total cost of this program can be as low as half the cost of similar existing programs on the mainland, though it is still pricey given the requirements to fly aircraft, as of today, 4 years cost ~$150K.  The first three years are focused on classroom and simulator training, while the fourth includes live flight time in aircraft.  As of now, the fourth year takes place at an affiliate school on the mainland.
