Guest Speaker

Guest Speaker June 16 2021 Yu Yok Perring

Wednesday’s Guest Speaker was Club Member Yu Yok Perring.  Yu Yok was born and raised in Singapore. She left in 1985 but has returned many times over the years and each time the infrastructure has changed. She encouraged everyone to visit Singapore for 3 days if you are travelling to Asia.  Singapore is 281.2 square miles, half the size of Oahu, with 5.6 million people. Yu Yok received her Bachelors Degree from UH Hilo and her Masters Degree in Business and International Marketing from McGill University, with help from a Rotary Scholarship. She currently works for ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center as the Director of Marketing. They have a small staff so everyone wears many hats when it comes to marketing and fundraising. They are looking at reopening the facility rentals in August. They need to apply for permits to increase the limit. The current projects at ‘Imiloa are the 7 week Summer Camp, Planetarium maintenance to upgrade the shows and the 2 week Hualalai Summer Camp for the Four Seasons employees children. At this time they are looking at reopening in July; first to members then later in the month to the General Public.  Yu Yok met her husband Mike through Rotary. Yu Yok thanked everyone who reached out to her while she was going through her cancer treatment. She had a lobectomy and recently finished chemotherapy. In the future Yu Yok looks forward to travelling to Singapore and the mainland and working with the American Cancer Society to raise awareness.
