Announcements by the President

The song A Spoonful of Sugar, from the movie Mary Poppins, was inspired by the songwriters son who had just received his Polio vaccine.  Knowing that his son was terrified of injections, he asked how the vaccination went and it was a drop of a sugar cube.  It's a small world.

Guest Speaker June 2 2021 Junichi Noumaru

On Wednesday we were taken on a virtual tour of Mauna Kea with our Club’s Past President Junichi Noumaru.  He began his tour of Mauna Kea with bags of potato chips in Hilo to demonstrate the change in atmospheric pressure when the bags arrive at the mountain. One advantage of the virtual tour was that it allowed people to experience the mountain during the day and night. On the way up to the summit he stopped at 9,000 foot elevation Onizuka Visitor Center where the reforestation project is underway and showed us the Mamane and Silver Swords. Then he continued on to the summit past glacial deposits from approximately 150,000 years ago. At the summit, 13,800 feet, thinking and speaking slow down so he did a voice over to show each of the telescopes. The Visitor Center at Keck Observatory was closed due to COVID so Junichi went over to Subaru Telescope to show the unique shape due to the wind. After that he headed down to Lake Waiau which is the 7th highest lake in the US and the highest in Hawaii. While filming the sunset Junichi was fortunate to capture a green flash, his first one. After sunset he showed video of meteors and artificial satellites in the night sky. The presentation ended with his son popping the puffed up potato chips bag.
