April 13 Remarkable Person Luncheon
YWCA Remarkable Person luncheon, April 13. Dr. Lynda Dolan and Mitch Roth will be the honorees.  Hilo Hawaiian.
 
May 7 Hilo Huli
Hilo Huli, May 7 on Coconut Island.  Primary fund-raiser for RC of S. Hilo.
 
May 19-21 District Meeting
District meeting, May 19-21, Sheraton Kaanapali.  Check D5000 website for registration, etc.
 
Club Social
Second Thursday of every month is our club social at Cronies, 4:30-6:30.  Bring a friend or prospective member.  Next social is April 13.
 
Polio Plus and Rotary Foundation
For Polio Plus, we have met our goal.  For Rotary Foundation, 60% of our members have contributed.  Alan O., our Rotary Foundation Chair, recognized Sandra W. as a silver donor and Lorraine D. as a bronze donor for the Polio Plus campaign.
 
HRYF Scholarship Recipient
Kim K. introduced our impressive scholarship recipient, Komela McAuliffe.  Komela will attend Lewis and Clarke (Portland, Oregon), where she plans to major in education.  She is from Honokaa.  She has coached soccer, tutored at middle school, and would like to teach math at Kamehameha School.  She heard about the Rotary scholarship from her counselor.

Whether solid waste or liquid waste, the challenge is the same-- can we turn this liability into a sustainable asset?  Our County's Director of the Department of Environmental Management, William Kucharsky, focused on the current efforts to reuse wastewater, but also touched on the recent sewage spill in Hilo Bay and composting.

Fight the Bite: Mosquito-Borne Diseases
Those pesky mosquitos can make you more than itchy.  Of the six species of mosquitoes in Hawaii, two species are of primary concern that are active day and night.  These species have been responsible and are capable of spreading Dengue, Zika, Chikunguya and other serious diseases.  Jason Dela Cruz of the Department of Health explained the risks and prevention measures.
