Welcome to another issue of our weekly bulletin! Find out what we covered during the last weekly meeting, and what we learned from our speaker.
Announcements
Dictionary Project
James T., our Club's Community Service director, may have another school lined up for next week. Stay tuned.
Dump Your Change to Dump Polio
Alan O., our Club's Rotary International Foundation chair, reported that contributions are at $389. The Board approved matching members' donations. Keep bringing your coins and dollar bills.
Oktoberfest
Katie L. reminded members to submit their Oktoberfest Silent Auction Contribution Form. Each member is encouraged to contribute-- an item you have asked a business to donate, an item you personally donate, a gift certificate, or buy extra tickets. You may bring the item to a regular meeting by 9/21/16, or ask to have it picked up. Please fill out and return the contribution form by mail or email according to instructions on the form.
Other Events of Interest:
Hawaii Island Women's Leadership Summit-- August 26, Hilton Waikoloa
Potential Rotary Leaders Seminar (PRLS)-- October 8, Hospice of Hilo
Save the date: October 7, 2016, 5:30-9:00 p.m., Sangha Hall. Planning the Oktoberfest 2016 is in full swing. David D., this year's chair, updated the members in a Club Assembly and encouraged members to sign up for the various tasks to make this event a success.
Bundled and spirited, our members manned Station #5 of the August 20th Volcano Run. Members included leader Katie Lambert, Richard Cunningham, Mary Begier, Tom Witthans, Steve Jacunski, William Knight, Miyuki Lee, and Kevin and Dayday Hopkins who encouraged the runners and kept them hydrated.
How do you spell l-i-t-e-r-a-c-y? With the help of the dictionaries distributed to the third graders of Hilo Union Elementary on August 24th, those students should be on a more solid path to become better readers and writers. It's difficult to distinguish the Rotarians from the third graders but our literacy ambassadors, led by James Tyrin, included William Knight, Kim Keahiolalo, Anita Cunningham, Marlene Norton, Katie Lambert, and Junichi Noumaru.
Happy Dollars & Recognitions
David D.-- $5 to gratefully acknowledge water problem solving by kumiai grandmaster, Alan O. (David, Alan, and Barbara live in the same kumiai area).

Steve J.-- $5 to dispute the sign as a good idea (in jest)
Marlene N.-- $2 happy for not having to deal with neurotic dogs in her pet-sitting business during the thunderstorm.
Alan O.-- $5 happy in awe of kolea birds who migrate 2700 miles every season and show up in the same yard year after year.
