Announcements by the President

The song A Spoonful of Sugar, from the movie Mary Poppins, was inspired by the songwriters son who had just received his Polio vaccine.  Knowing that his son was terrified of injections, he asked how the vaccination went and it was a drop of a sugar cube.  It's a small world.

Guest Speaker

Guest Speaker May 26,2021 Michelle Flemming, Child Care Director for the YWCA Developmental Preschool and recipient of District Grant funds

Wednesday’s Guest Speaker was Club Member Michelle Flemming. Michelle is the Child Care Director for the YWCA Developmental Preschool. She began at the DOE in 2008 and decided to transition to early childhood with the YWCA after her son was born. They are licensed by the Department of Human Services and Nationally Accredited by National Association for the Education of Young Children. The Preschool also provides breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks to their students funded by the County of Hawaii nonprofit grants and Ohana Fuels. Due to COVID restrictions the school had to change the drop off procedure for the children. They soon discovered that the children responded better to being dropped off at the door instead of being walked into the classroom and they had less “separation anxiety”. This year school also has smaller classroom sizes and the children have sneeze guards so they are separated but can see each other easily. Counsellors have also been brought in so children, families, and staff have an unbiased person to voice their frustrations to. This year a garden was added and the Children have been learning about gardening and food sustainability. The preschool received a Rotary District Grant this year that was used for replacement school supplies which they have put to good use.
