Our Community and Club collectively suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Barry Taniguchi last Friday.  Barry could be described as a humble, community minded servant leader on top of being an astute businessman.  Pete Muller noted that Barry was one of the first people he invited to be a Charter Member of our Club in 1988, he loved what Rotary stood for and thought "The Four Way Test" was great, which is not surprising since that is the way he and his family ran and continue to run KTA.  Barry graduated from Hilo High and UH Manoa with a degree in Accounting, earning his CPA license in 1971 while working for Haskins & Sells (known as Deloitte today), National Car Rental and Realty Investment Co. before returning to Hilo in 1983 to work in the family business.  Barry led the third generation of K. Taniguchi Store, originally founded in 1916.  Under Barry's leadership, KTA continued to thrive on Hawaii Island while also becoming one of the largest positive forces in the community with its charitable works and general support of worthy causes.  Barry's support of local farmers and food producers and the UH higher education system (HCC and UH Hilo) will continue to have a long lasting impact.  The Pacific Tsunami Museum would not have become a reality without his and KTA's support.  Barry was not a person seeking credit or recognition for his good deeds, he had a way of positively influencing others to act for the collective good, he went out of his way to make others feel welcome.  Barry's legacy will continue to live within our hearts and through our positive actions.  Mahalo Barry, for all you have done for our Community and our Club, we will miss you greatly.
