Club Announcements:
- President Hansen announced that the Hale Oluea Club House is inviting 20 Hilo Bay Rotarians to visit on February 25th between 10 am and noon.
- Richard Cunningham reminded the club that he is working on a jewelry box as a donation incentive for HRYF and U. of H Foundation. The contribution, to date, are $2.4K and $1.4K respectively. He expressed the need for members to donate generously to each scholarship.
- Kim Keahiolalo needs one more volunteer to interview prospective scholarship recipients. Mike Carroll will join Kim and Lorraine Davis on the interview team.
- Virginia Juettner needs 1 or 2 volunteers to help with Birthday Book on 2/18. They will be joined by a few members of the Hilo Rotary Club who are observing.
- Alan Okinaka will have a signup sheet at our next meeting for readers.
- Anita Cunningham needs one more nighttime dorm monitor for RYLA. Jan Haraguchi-Abundo volunteered to do the second night in addition to the first night.
- Navy week plans are still waiting for approval, but it is scheduled for 3/9-3/12.
- James Tyrin is looking for ideas for the D5000 workday. Please contact him with your suggestions.
- The Epic Food Fight to End Hunger is scheduled for 5/16. We are looking for a coordinator.

Guest Speaker Julie Mitchell Kuikahi Mediation
- Julie announced that effective February 5th, Act 278 the Prefiling Eviction Mediation program will be effective for two years throughout the state.
- This is pilot program designed for tenants and landlords who voluntarily wish to bypass the court the system when eviction is pending. This diversionary program is only open to residential evictions actions.
- It starts when a tenant receives a notice of eviction. The tenant has 10 days to contact the appropriate mediation center.
- Mediation must take place between the tenant and the landlord within 30 days. After 20 days without mediation the landlord may start a court proceeding for eviction.
- If the tenant does not complete the mediation, the landlord is entitled to recover legal and court fees.
- Preparation is essential for the tenant. If a tenant does not have a lawyer, legal aid is available if the tenant qualifies. Besides arranging documentation to bolster tenant’s position, the tenant should have reasonable expectations for the outcome of the mediation. These outcomes should be consistent with the tenant’s finances.
