The Rotary Club of Hilo Bay: Meeting Notes – August 26, 2026

Call to Order

President Jan Haraguichi-Abundo called the hybrid meeting to order at 7:00. Nineteen of the fifty four members of the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay  were in attendance.

Opening Activities

The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Tim Hansen and Kevin Readon shared  an inspirational message: People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway. The biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest minds. Think big anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway. Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway. The Paradoxical Commandments

Guest Speaker  was honorary member and past president Junichi Noumura from Japan via Zoom at 2 am in Tokyo. His topic was the Rotary Foundation but first he brought us up to date on his family, his work and his life in Japan after living in Hilo for 28 years. He bikes to his office on a 40 year old bike. He is not currently in a Rotary Club as the local clubs are noon clubs and is working on the 30m telescope project overseeing the manufacture of its mirrors.

Junichi walked us through the donation process to the Rotary Foundation and its distribution mechanism. He also included information on the D 5000 grant process which distributes funds back to the Rotary Clubs in the District. He explained where to find the potential global grant recipients on the D 5000 website. As always, Junichi had charts to explain and confound us with the workings of the Rotary Foundation.
